"Broken Windows" theory purports to prevent serious crimes by aggressively going after minor, petty violations (like a broken window) as a way to deter more serious offenses -- despite no criminology research to prove declines in crime rates. In practice, Broken Windows encourages police to harass, racially profile, entrap, and punitively arrest citizens in low-income Black and Latino communities. In this video captured on a phone, cops attack a student on her way to school.
El Grito de Sunset Park and the Coalition co-sponsored a Town Hall in Sunset Park, Brooklyn to openly ask local politicians how they plan to stop Broken Windows police abuses. People from the community placed Brooklyn DA Eric Gonzalez and Public Advocate Letitia James on the hot seat and challenged them.
